Quantum computing heralds a new era of computing power. For decades, the computing power of computers has developed more or less according to Moore’s Law – computing power doubles every 18 months or so.
This development is in danger of stalling. Yet computing power is the basis for processing the huge amounts of data that are increasingly being collected.
Quantum computing could be the next big advance that upsets the laws of computing power development:
The basic elements of quantum computers can assume more complex states than “0” and “1”, as in electrical components. This means that quantum computers can be millions of times more powerful than conventional computer architectures.
Governments such as the German federal government are promoting the technology with programs worth billions and technology companies are in a race for “quantum superiority”.
